Update

THUD!!!

Well, if you haven’t guessed it by now, the CROTUSman has fallen off the wagon. It’s been a pretty busy week thus far and I missed the last three days. At this point, I think I may just re-start from week one. I’m also thinking that I may take it off line for awhile since posting everyday has become a real pain. I know it helps, but it’s gotten more difficult to keep up with over the last couple of months. Anyway, I’m not sure. What I do know is that I need to get my arse back in gear over here. Anyway, until we meet again, TCB.

HYBRID DAY 8 - CHEST AND BACK

As far as today, well, it was kind of a washout. I woke up early and decided to get the Chest & Back done. The first couple of sets of push-ups and pull-ups were okay and I was able to surpass my numbers from last week, but by the time the chin-ups came around, I got a terrible headache. I actually popped a couple of advil in the middle of the first round, but that didn’t seem to help. Anyway, long story short, I finished up the first round, and then called it a day. Obviously, it wasn’t the way I wanted to start the week, but what are you going to do.

I’ll be back tomorrow with Plyo Cardio Circuit. Let’s hope it’s better than today. Until then, TCB.

HYBRID DAY 7 - OFF DAY

Apologies for not stopping in yesterday, but it slipped my mind. In any event, there wasn’t really much to report. It was a pretty nasty day here in New York, and after running some errands, the CROTUSlady and I just kind of took it easy and did some clearing out of the DVR.

HYBRID DAY 6 - CARDIO POWER AND RESISTANCE

Despite being Friday, the most joyous of all the days of the week, the CROTUSman didn’t get off to a great start this morning. When the alarm rang and I got out of bed, I immediately felt the remnants of yesterday’s L & B as I was pretty sore in the legs. Unfortunately, not ten steps later, thing got worse as I stepped out of my bedroom, into a puddle of piss that my beloved Mookie Wilson (my dog) had deposited for me. I pretty much lost it after that.

Anyway, after cleaning up the mess, I popped in Cardio Power & Resistance. It’s been a while since I did this workout, so I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting into, but I was happy to see the relatively short run time of 40 minutes. But, then the warm-up began. I don’t really care for any of the Insanity warm-ups because, quite frankly, after the first round, it’s not really a warm-up anymore, but I particularly don’t care for this one what with the jumping and stuff.

The good news is that by the time I got to the stretching, I was drenched and looking forward to the stretch. As far as the workout itself, it was so-so. Other than the “Power Jumps”, I can’t think of anything that gave me much trouble from a physical standpoint, though I did take some breaks towards the end.

All in all, as I said, it was a so-so calorie burn, but considering the way the day started, I was happy that I had worked through it. Now I just have to deal with the soreness in my legs. The good news is that the first week is now in the books, and by Sunday, I can hopefully start to kick it up a notch with a little more intensity.

Speaking of kicking it up a notch, I’ve been going through a book I purchased a while back for some new recipes for lunch and dinner (http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Muscle-Chow-Workouts/dp/1594865485). Earlier in the week, I tried to go back to the same menu that I had used for round one, but I just couldn’t do it. It’s time to switch things up a bit, as I’ve been basically eating the same foods with slight variations for about a year now.

Well, that’s it for the CROTUSman. I’ll pop in tomorrow on the off day. Until then, TCB.

HYBRID DAY 5 - LEGS AND BACK

If the CROTUSman was looking forward to yesterday’s Yoga X, then the total opposite can be said about today’s re-introduction to Legs & Back. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, L & B is hard, and even though I came to appreciate it by the end of my first round, I’m not sure that I can say I ever really learned to enjoy it. Also, I ended up getting home later than usual last night so it was a pretty long day and I knew it was going to be tough getting out of bed today.

Anyway, the show must go on, right? I didn’t end up with a great calorie burn, but it was a pretty satisfying workout and as I get re-introduced to these moves, I hope to kick it up a few notches in the weeks to come. My numbers basically mirrored my week one numbers from the first round, though I did use more weight in some instances. I think I could have probably used more weight across the board, but I was a little fearful of the soreness that I know is going to follow.

The one area I’m a little disappointed/concerned about is the pull-ups. I know it’s only the first week, but I’m not happy with where I’m at on the pull-up bar. The first round of pull-ups wasn’t terrible, but by the time the second round came around, I was really relying on the chair a lot. I know that these numbers will go up, but I was hoping that I would be closer to where I ended up when the first round finished. Then again, I haven’t done any pull-ups in two months, so I guess it’s true – you do lose it if you don’t use it (apologies to Steve Carell).

Anyway, that’s it for the CROTUSman. I’ll be back tomorrow with Cardio Power & Resistance. Until then, TCB.

HYBRID DAY 4 - YOGA X

It was Yoga X for the CROTUSman and I have to admit, I was kind of looking forward to it. That’s a far cry from the first round of X when I really dreaded Yoga X for the first month or so. Eventually, though I came around and really ended up enjoying it.

I hadn’t done any Yoga for about two months, so I was skeptical about where I would be. Much to my surprise though, I managed to make my way through this workout fairly well, and overall, it was a nice re-introduction to Yoga. Going in, I was a little worried that the chest soreness I’d been experiencing was going to hinder me with the push-ups and vinyasas, but it really didn’t end up being much of an issue, and y the time the first 45 minutes were through I had a nice sweat going.

Still, it’s clear that there is room for improvement in a number of areas. That whole, put your hand through your leg and clasp it behind your back routine, where Tony says, “now this may be uncomfortable for some people” was…quite uncomfortable for the CROTUSman. I also had some trouble with Warrior 3, which is not unusual, but there were days towards the end of Round 1 where I did a passable job, so I’d like to improve on that or at least get back to where I was. Lastly, the Plough to Shoulder Stand has always been tough, and I’d like to finally get over the hump with that.

Other than that, it was a pretty nice return to Yoga this morning, and I think it helped to alleviate some of the residual soreness I’ve been dealing with.

That’s it for the CROTUSman. I’ll be back tomorrow with Legs & Back. Until then, TCB.

HYBRID DAY 3 - SHOULDERS AND ARMS, ARX

The CROTUSman fell asleep on the train ride home last night, which usually results in my tossing and turning for a good hour when I go to bed. Last night however, I knew the minute I hit the mattress that I was going to be out like a light and sure enough, not even my brother’s 75 lbs. dog who I am dog sitting and who insisted on sleeping right in the middle of the bed could stop me from passing out.

Even with the good night sleep, I was a little groggy this morning when I woke up. Even though Insanity was a real grind, I was able to sleep a little longer with the shorter workouts (at least in Phase I), so I’m going to need to re-train myself to these really early (5 AM) wake up calls.

Anyway, it was Shoulders & Arms today and even though this is a fairly long workout, I generally tend to enjoy it as it’s straight up lifting. I also like the pace compared to some of the frantic Insanity programs, as you have plenty of time between sets to catch your breath while still getting a really good pump. For the first two or three rounds, I was able to put up some more weight than I initially expected, but I kind of took the last couple of rounds a little easier and went lighter on the weights. While it’s nothing crazy, I did notice that I’m definitely experiencing some upper body soreness, so I don’t want to overdo it with three more workouts still left to go.

I finished up with a half way decent round of ARX. I’m in the 15-20 rep range right now, but it was a much better session than Sunday’s.

In short, it was a good workout, and I look forward to upping the weights on this one in the future.

DIET:

I didn’t get a chance to log my food intake yesterday, and probably won’t be able to do so today either, but the diet was pretty good yesterday. In fact, it was probably my best day in the last month or so, if not longer, so I was feeling good about that. Hopefully by Wednesday I’ll be able to log my food again so I’ll have a much clearer picture as to where I am.

That’s it for the CROTUSman. I’ll be back tomorrow with Yoga X. Until then, TCB.
